Elliott Hudson College’s Film Studies students recently attended a special screening of “Back to Black,” the latest biopic about the legendary British singer Amy Winehouse, as part of the Leeds International Film Festival.

The film, directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and starring Marisa Abela as Amy Winehouse, explores the highs and lows of Winehouse’s life and career, spotlighting her remarkable talent and the challenges she faced. This screening was particularly useful for the A level students as they are currently studying the 2015 documentary “Amy,” which delves into Winehouse’s personal and professional struggles.

Before the screening, students discussed the significance of biographical films in understanding the complexities of cultural figures. “Amy Winehouse’s story is one of both incredible artistry and heartbreaking tragedy,” said Miss Cosham, Film Studies Teacher, at Elliott Hudson College. “This screening allows students to see how filmmakers interpret and present these narratives on screen.”

After enjoying the film, students participated in a lively discussion about its portrayal of Winehouse’s life and the creative choices made by the filmmakers. Many expressed their appreciation for the film’s candid representation of her struggles with fame and addiction, drawing parallels to the themes explored in the earlier documentary.

“I’m a fan of Amy Winehouse so it’s really good to see how ‘Back in Black’ builds on the narrative established in ‘Amy,’” said one Year 12 Film Studies student. “Both films highlight her talent but also show the pressures she faced as an artist.”

The trip not only enriched the students’ educational experience but also reinforced Elliott Hudson College’s commitment to immersing students in the vibrant film culture of Leeds. As part of their curriculum, students are encouraged to analyse various cinematic styles and storytelling methods, with a focus on understanding the impact of biographical storytelling in film.

The Leeds International Film Festival continues to showcase a diverse array of films, providing an excellent platform for aspiring filmmakers to explore new narratives and creative approaches.
