Bar Mock Trial Competition 2023
Elliott Hudson College law students competed in the regional heats of the prestigious Bar Mock Trial competition this week, held at Leeds Beckett University Law School’s Broadcasting Place. This was part of the students’ Wednesday afternoon enrichment programme and provided an invaluable opportunity for students to hone their advocacy and public speaking skills, essential for their future careers in law.
The Bar Mock Trial competition is a national event run by Young Citizens, and this year was the second year EHC students took part and demonstrated their legal skills and teamwork. Seventeen Year 12 and 13 students competed, having secured their places on the team through a rigorous selection process. Each student presented a two-sided argument on a topical current affair during interviews in July and began preparing their legal cases from the start of the academic year in September.

Purpose and Preparation:
The purpose of participating in this competition was to strengthen advocacy skills and improve public speaking abilities. Additionally, students had the opportunity to receive feedback from practicing judges and barristers, offering invaluable insights for their future careers.
Young Citizens provided two cases requiring the students to prepare both Prosecution and Defence teams. The Bar Mock Trial team worked diligently during the first half term, analysing cases and preparing their arguments. In the second half term, students selected their roles, including barristers, witnesses, a court clerk, an usher, and jury members. The team engaged in extensive practice trials, honing their skills in examination-in-chief and cross-examination.
With support from a local barrister who reviewed their questions and provided feedback, the EHC team entered the competition fully prepared and confident.
Competition Day:
On the day of the competition, the EHC team participated in three heats against different schools and colleges. The roles of Prosecution and Defence were assigned by a draw for each heat, and experienced judges and barristers evaluated the performances. Students also had the opportunity to engage in a Q&A session with these legal professionals, gaining further insights into the legal field.
Mrs Barley, Law Teacher at EHC, expressed immense pride in the students: “Our students were exceptional on the day, demonstrating the skills and dedication they have developed since July. They performed with confidence and professionalism, and as teachers, Miss Binns and I could not be prouder of their efforts.”
Students learned the importance of perseverance and teamwork, essential traits for future legal professionals. Olivia Roberts, one of the participants, shared her insights: “The main lesson I have learned is perseverance. A case may be hard or the nerves of speaking in front of a large audience may put you off. But with the support of the team, we overcame these challenges.”
Bobby Akinduro, another participant, reflected on his experience: “For anyone that aspires to work in the law sector, the Bar Mock Trial competition is incredibly helpful in gaining the necessary experience needed to excel in the practice.”
The experience has not only enhanced the students’ legal skills but also provided a sense of camaraderie and identity. Anna Barley concluded, “I am blown away by the talent among our students. We have some exceptional future legal professionals on our hands. Please don’t forget where it all started when you are all high-flying lawyers!”
