Elliott Hudson College is proud to offer the Gold Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Award, giving students an exciting opportunity to challenge themselves, build confidence, and develop key life skills – all while having fun and making memories that last a lifetime!

Open to students who have already completed the Bronze and Silver Awards, as well as those starting fresh through Direct Entry Gold, the programme is a perfect fit for young people ready to take on a rewarding personal development journey.

Over the course of the programme, participants dedicate an average of one hour per week to each of three core areas:

• Skill Development – such as learning to drive, playing a musical instrument or mastering photography;
• Physical Activity – from football training and running to gymnastics or dance;
• Volunteering – including supporting charity shops, helping out at Guides, or running a local sports club’s tuck shop.

But for many students, the expedition is the highlight. This unforgettable adventure involves four days of trekking through challenging terrain, carrying everything needed – including food, tents, and cooking equipment – and navigating between campsites entirely independently. It’s a true test of resilience, teamwork, and determination.

Between Wednesday 25 to Saturday 28 June 2025 was The Duke of Edinburgh Gold expedition. This took place in the Yorkshire Dales, starting in Settle and walking via Malham Cove to finish in Gargrave or Skipton, depending on the year group. Students enjoyed working with others towards a common goal, and had plenty of funny moments during the expedition – including missing a train stop due to not wanting to barge past elderly train passengers!

In addition to the expedition, DofE Gold participants must complete a five-day, four-night residential experience away from home. This could involve anything from a conservation project to a youth camp and gives students the chance to meet new people and immerse themselves in a completely new environment.

To support students through every step of the journey, Elliott Hudson College offers weekly sessions during Enrichment that focus on:

• Route planning and map reading;
• First aid and countryside code;
• Meal planning and camp cooking;
• Equipment prep and campcraft;
• Practice walks to build stamina and confidence.

All progress is tracked through the DofE’s online platform, helping students stay organised and motivated throughout the year.
