As part of Elliott Hudson College’s Work Experience Week, students have taken part in exciting and insightful placements at finance firms across Leeds. These opportunities provided a first-hand look into the professional worlds of accounting, consultancy, and corporate finance. Throughout the week, students developed key workplace skills, built confidence, and gained a clearer understanding of potential career paths—highlighting just how valuable real-world experience can be in shaping their futures.

Aamira Patel – Parsons Accountants Limited

Aamira Patel spent her week at Parsons Accountants Limited, where she immersed herself in the world of spreadsheets, tax returns, and trial balance sheets.

“The main thing I learnt was the process of doing accounts for clients,” Aamira shared. “By the end of the week, I was proud to be completing documents on my own with much less help.”

Her experience wasn’t just about technical knowledge — Aamira also gained a better understanding of office culture, including collaboration, client communication, and the level of focus required in a professional setting.

“It led me to question whether I’d really thrive in an office workplace, which is just as valuable as confirming a career path,” she added. “Either way, I’ve developed skills that will benefit my future.”

Milo Plunkett – Lowell Group Limited

Milo Plunkett joined Lowell Group Limited with aspirations of building a career in finance. His placement gave him a better idea of the roles within the industry and how he might enter the sector in the future.

“I worked efficiently with the people around me in the different roles,” he said. “It’s helped me understand both the pathways into finance and what working in an office actually feels like.”

Although he wished he could’ve done more, Milo’s week still solidified his interest in the sector and gave him a valuable glimpse into life at a major finance firm.

Tilly Smyth – Yorkshire Financial Consultancy

Tilly Smyth took on her placement at Yorkshire Financial Consultancy, where she honed practical and professional skills—from spreadsheets to client communications.

“I learnt how to complete a spreadsheet on Excel and even had the confidence to speak with Business Development Managers,” Tilly said. “I was proud of myself for taking the lead on calls with clients.”

The social atmosphere of the workplace was a highlight for Tilly, who found that the banter and supportive team environment made the office an enjoyable place to be.

“I’ll definitely consider office-based jobs in the future,” she reflected. “I feel like I made the most of the time I had there.”
