Elliott Hudson College’s A Level Geography students recently took part in their second annual field studies trip to the Cranedale Field Studies Centre in North Yorkshire. Building on the positive feedback from last year’s experience, this three-day trip provided a hands-on educational opportunity aimed at enhancing students’ fieldwork skills for their Non-Examined Assessment (NEA).

During the trip, each student designed their own project, choosing to focus either on urban environments or the natural environment. This flexibility allowed them to explore key geographical issues in both contexts while gathering essential data for their coursework.

Guided by expert instructors, students delved into the urban and rural landscapes around Cranedale. They investigated changes in the urban microclimate in Beverley and examined variations in water and carbon stores and flows within the Dalby Forest area.

After developing their project proposals and utilising secondary source data back in the classroom, students eagerly set out to collect primary data in the field. They applied theoretical knowledge through practical sampling, data collection, analysis, and statistical testing. This real-world application of classroom learning provides invaluable insights as students navigate the challenges of identifying and addressing biases in their observations. While the trip was academically intensive, there was also plenty of time for socialising and bonding. Students enjoyed recreational activities within the centre such as tennis, table tennis, and board games.

Reflecting on their experience, students expressed a newfound appreciation for geographical fieldwork and a sense of pride in gathering their own firsthand data. Teachers accompanying the group highlighted the significance of these practical experiences in shaping well-rounded geographers. They praised the students for their dedication and enthusiasm throughout the trip.

“The three-day residential field trip immerses students in their fieldwork topics and encourages genuine engagement, allowing them to achieve more highly when back in college” said Subject Leader of Geography Mr. Naylor. “It also helps to build relationships within and between Geography classes and with staff. Our students were commended by Centre staff for their hard work and preparedness. It was a fantastic three days away!”
