As the college broke up for the Easter Holidays, eleven of our students took part in a practice expedition as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards. Eight of our students are working towards their Gold award with the remaining three working towards their Bronze.

Gold: Toby Dook, Blake Howgate, Georgia Hemingway, Ellen Hilton, Ben Fink, Filip Wypych, Abigail Barlow, Ellie Bedford-Stainforth

Accompanying them on their trip were Mrs Carr, Mr Waugh, Miss Binns, Mr Wilkins from reprographics and Ciaran Longmore, rowing coach.

The group spent 3 days in the Yorkshire Dales visiting Malham, Cracoe and Skipton. They walked approximately 15 – 20 km per day carrying all their clothes, food, cooking and camping equipment as well as completing activities such as orientating the route using OS maps and compasses and cooking their breakfast and main evening meal.

“It was fantastic to see the students putting into practice everything they have learnt during their enrichment sessions and preparing for with this practice run. In true British style the weather wasn’t always on our side, but this didn’t put the students off and their determination and focus shone through, resulting in a thoroughly enjoyable 3 days in the great outdoors.”

The students are looking forward to completing their final expedition in a couple of months’ time when year 12 Duke of Edinburgh students will also complete their Gold practice expedition. This will see them visit the Peak District between 30 June and 3 July.
