In November the GORSE Academies Trust launched its annual competition inviting students from all academies across the trust to submit a creative piece of writing. The competition was initially set up by Anne Marie Garnett 5 years ago as a way of encouraging students to write creatively for pleasure. Prizes are awarded to an overall winner and runner up in every year group across the trust.

This year’s competition invited students to write an original story of no more than 500 words taking inspiration from one of the following:

  • A narrative that begins with the words ‘One Day’.
  • A narrative based on the idea of connections.
  • A narrative with the tile ‘Change’

From the entries submitted by our own students here at Elliott Hudson, we are pleased to announce our overall winner is Phoebe Winks who has received a £15 Amazon voucher. Our runner up is Fred Sparkes has been awarded a £10 Amazon voucher.

“I entered the Great Gorse Writing Competition because I love expressing myself through writing and it allows me to be creative and channel emotions in words.”
Phoebe Winks, year 12 student

“I chose to enter the competition due to having a story from year 10 that I was never able to hand in due to Covid, I had faith in the story and am glad to see that it was well placed by coming 2nd in the contest.”
Fred Sparkes, year 12 student

“It is always wonderful to see our Post 16 students engaging with trust wide competitions. The entries this year were of a high standard and judging the winners was difficult. Both Phoebe?and Fred’s writing was engaging and mature and demonstrated?a sophisticated understanding of how language can be crafted for effect. Congratulations on your successful entries Phoebe and Fred and many thanks to all who entered.”
