During work experience week, students from Elliott Hudson College completed work placements at a number of West Yorkshire law firms, developing essential skills and gaining experience that will help their future careers in the legal industry. Their journeys provided them with hands-on exposure to the world of law, offering a glimpse into the daily tasks of solicitors, while also empowering them with confidence and direction for their futures.

Emily English – Shoosmiths

Emily English’s time at Shoosmiths, a corporate law firm, reinforced her desire to pursue a career in corporate law. “I wanted to gain some experience in Corporate Law and learn some of the day-to-day tasks involved in being a solicitor,” Emily noted. During her work placement she learnt how to compose share chronologies and got an understanding of what a job in corporate law would look like.

“I definitely want to get an apprenticeship after college as I have enjoyed my time working at Shoosmiths. I was most proud of the interactions I had with people who worked there, I feel as if I was confident when sometimes there have been situations where I haven’t been so confident.

Eesaa Nadeem – Tyler Hoffman Solicitors

Eesaa Nadeem’s work placement was at Tyler Hoffman Solicitors allowing him to witness the professional world of solicitors up close, including the opportunity to attend a hearing at court. ” I learnt that as a solicitor you need to be very professional by the way you dress and how speak to a client. I am also very proud as I had the opportunity to go court and watch a hearing which was a really great experience.”

Liberty Trotter – Ison Harrison Solicitors

Liberty Trotter, who spent time at Ison Harrison Solicitors, embraced the challenge of understanding the pressures and rewards of legal work. ” Despite the job being high pressure with a heavy workload, it is also manageable and enjoyable. I learnt a range of types of soliciting too, including conveyancing, family law and clinical negligence.”

Liberty is excited about the possibility of returning to the firm for work over the summer and hopes it will lead to an apprenticeship. “I will hopefully be doing some work over the summer for the firm, and I hope that this could lead to an apprenticeship and give me the skills that I can use to go on to apply for similar apprenticeships.”
