A number of our A-Level Mathematics students recently visited the University of Leeds, School of Mathematics to learn more about the exciting opportunities available to those who pursue a degree in the subject. The visit aimed to give students a deeper understanding of what it’s like to study Mathematics at university and provide insight into the different degree options available to them.

During the visit, students attended a series of lectures led by university professors; toured the facilities and spoke to students about university life. The students also had the opportunity to attend a handson maths session, where they interacted with several stalls and talked to professionals about different aspects of mathematics, engineering, and physics.

“The trip was amazing – the time that went into planning the event is obvious, from the hands-on sessions where we had wind tunnels, aerofoils and Penrose tiling, to the talk at the end about how often curves meet and how we can use simple geometric processes to solve seemingly impossible tasks,” said Sam Ashlik in Year 12.

“My favourite part of the day was easily being able to talk to one of the people at a stall in the handson maths session about engineering, physics and future career prospects within multiple fields. It was fascinating to learn about how gyroscopes work and how using large steel balls we can produce enough energy to burn through multiple layers of paper. Overall, the trip was fantastic, and I would recommend it to younger years too.”
“We really encourage students in Year 12 to attend trips like this as it helps inform them about their choices, post-18,” said Mrs. Prior-Chappell, Go Higher Progression Officer who attended the trip. “It was great to see the students so engaged and interested to know more about where a degree in Mathematics could lead them.”
