National Junior Indoor Rowing Championships
On Friday 4 March, 14 of our Elliott Hudson College rowers competed in the National Junior Indoor Championships (NJIRC). The Championships is an annual competition, and this year was held virtually. Year 12 and 13 students rowed for 2000 meters and the first to finish were the winners, 2000 meters is the same as the distance rowed in the Olympics.

All our students who took part in NJIRC did extremely well, with notable performances from Abi Craven who came first in the year 12 girls’ race, Saskia Bailey who came forth in the same race and rowing newcomer Harry Acheampong who achieved seventh place in the year 13 boys’ race. Across The GORSE Academies Trust 4100 pupils competed during the week and collected 7 individual medals in total. This bodes well for the future of rowing at Elliott Hudson College.
A total of 164 rowing clubs, schools and colleges entered the competition with 7382 athletes submitting scores, this make NJIRC 2022 the largest indoor rowing competition to have ever of happened.
“The achievements of the rowers at Elliott Hudson College are truly phenomenal! Not only that we had 3 athletes make it into the top 10 in their year group but that all our rowers pushed themselves to get the best score they could. Emerging from a time where competition was so scarce, NJIRC gives all our students the opportunity to see where they rank with others from across the country.”
Ciarán Longmore, The GORSE Academies Trust Rowing Coach
Congratulations to everyone who took part.
