Redmayne Bentley Trip: Careers in Investment and Finance
Our Career Team recently took a group of Year 12 students who are interested in finance and investment careers on a visit to the headquarters of Redmayne Bentley in Leeds City Centre. The trip gave students a taste of the finance world, letting them dip their toes in and see what it’s all about.
After being warmly welcomed by Learning and Development Manager for Redmayne Bentley, Judith Ullock, students were taken on a full tour of the office, getting a peek behind the scenes of the company; exploring different parts of the business such as new clients, retention, and stock broking.
One of the highlights of the trip was the opportunity to delve into the rich history of Redmayne Bentley, as students examined the artefacts from the company’s archives, including old ledgers that chronicle its evolution over the years.
During the visit, the students were taken on a tour of the campus where they were able to see the various departments, lecture halls, and libraries. They also had the chance to talk to current undergraduate students about their experiences at Selwyn College and ask questions about university life.
“It was a lovely day out which was very informative and gave me a good idea on whether or not I would like to apply to Cambridge,” said Ellie Dibbs.
The student also had the chance to take part in a networking workshop with Redmayne Bentley employees that offered invaluable insights into the diverse pathways that lead to a career in finance. The employee ranged from experienced staff to trainee stockbrokers with many being on the company’s apprenticeship and graduate programmes.
“I think the students were pleasantly surprised to discover that many employees hadn’t initially set out to pursue careers in finance but had found their way into the sector after gaining experience in other industries,” said Miss Barrass, Work Experience Co-Ordinator from EHC.
“It’s great for them to see that they don’t need to decide their whole career right now, but just need to be open to new opportunities and willing to learn.”
As well as this the students gained a practical skill – mastering the art of folding a Financial Times newspaper – an essential skill set for navigating the world of finance!
Reflecting on their experience, many students expressed surprise at the breadth of roles and opportunities within the finance industry, dispelling preconceived notions of monotony and instead uncovering a realm of intrigue and excitement.
Mrs Thomson, Student Destinations Manager: World of Work said: “Thank you to all the staff for putting on a great event – the students had a great time and it was a good chance for them to see the range of role and opportunities within the finance sector.”
