Year 13 Chemistry students visited the Physical chemistry department where they saw Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography and Gas chromatography linked to mass spectra.
The students visited the STEM lab where they synthesised the painkiller Benzocaine from 4-aminobenzoic acid. The sample that they made was analysed using melting point apparatus and Infra-red spectroscopy.
The students had an opportunity to visit the atrium for their lunch, where we met EHC alumni Hassan Mir who is studying Undergraduate Chemistry at Bradford University.
The students had a very successful visit and were able to put into practice their practical skills in a million pound laboratory.
