A group of students from Elliott Hudson College including some who study A-level Spanish recently returned from an residential trip to Malaga, Spain, where they explored the rich culture and history of Andalusia.

Despite the at times rainy weather, the trip proved to be an exciting experience for the students, offering them a unique opportunity to discover a different urban environment with a coastal landscape. Highlights of the trip include iconic landmarks such as the Alhambra Palace in the town of Granada, where students were immersed in the region’s fascinating history.

For the A Level Spanish students, the trip was a chance to hone their language skills and immerse themselves in the local culture. They practiced speaking, listening, and reading Spanish, while also gaining a deeper understanding of Spanish traditions and customs. Meanwhile, all students enjoyed the stunning architecture of Malaga, drawing inspiration from its diverse array of buildings and monuments.

Subject Leader of Modern Foreign Languages, Dr Stuart, said: “This was a great opportunity for Spanish students to practise their spoken Spanish in a more realistic setting, both with local people that they met (tour guides, restaurant staff, etc.) and with staff on the trip. They also learned much more about Spanish culture and history, giving them first-hand cultural material to talk about in their speaking exams. They got to visit places which we have learned about in class in real life, such as the Alhambra Palace, and there was the opportunity to try classic Spanish food too.”

Jack Cooper, A level Spanish student said: “My favourite part of the trip was immersing myself into seeing different parts of Spanish culture, and heritage, especially the Malaga Cathedral; where it was the first time I spoke Spanish to a local (albeit rather reluctantly after encouragement from my peers). The confidence and satisfaction I felt after this moment will stay with me forever.”

Marie Sano, a Year 13 student added: “The most memorable moments for me were when we visited the mosque in Malaga, I thought that it was aesthetic. I also met some lovely people and loved visiting the Alhambra palace in Grenada despite the heavy rainfall.”

Mrs Bennet, Art and Design Teacher, expressed her delight at seeing the students embrace the diverse opportunities offered by the trip. “A wonderful adventure! Students relished the opportunity to explore different traditions, lifestyles, arts and culture. It was lovely to see new friendships form and students building memories that will last a lifetime.”
