Paracetamol synthesis.
15 Year 12 students visited Sheffield University. As part of the day, the students worked in the universities undergraduate laboratories in the Chemistry department.
The students synthesised paracetamol in a two-step process. Once complete, they purified the product and sent this for analysis in the mass spectrometer and proton NMR spectrometer.
As well as learning about reaction mechanisms and the pharmacology of paracetamol, students successfully completed the practical work needed to produce and purify paracetamol. Learning transferrable skills along the way.
At lunchtime, we visited the student union. As well as eating our lunch, we were able to see a flavour of student life in Sheffield. All students had a very productive and enjoyable day.
