World Book Day is a great opportunity to get students reading and exploring their world. This year, we want to celebrate the power of reading and the joy of literature. We’ve been doing a lot of fun things around here to get students excited about books:

EHC Little Library

We are happy to announce that the Little Library has been opened. Located in the STEM quad, this is a place for you to take a book to read for free as well as an area where you can donate books to make your library even better. There is no need to donate a book—we just want you to have one on hand if you happen to have any.

After reading the book, please return it or pass it on to someone else who wants to read it. We hope you will enjoy this new addition to our campus!

Subject Book Recommendations

In one lesson this week, each subject will celebrate by suggesting a book to read which is linked to that subject. These recommendations are not strictly linked to the specification but are encouraging wider reading around the subject.

The Masked Reader

We’ve been thinking about which books we really love, so some of our teachers have taken photos of themselves hiding behind their favourite books. These photos will be placed at Culture Corner along with a short description on why that book is their favourite and students will have the opportunity to guess which members of staff they think are behind the book.
The student who guesses the most right will win a £10 WH Smith voucher.

Gorse Writing Competition

To celebrate World Book Day, we are so excited to announce the Gorse Writing Competition this year. We’ve got a fantastic prize draw for you, and we want as many students as possible to enter!

This year, we’re asking you to write “A New Arrival.”

We want to know what it’s like to arrive somewhere new and how you feel about that. What are all the things you want to do, see, and experience? How do you feel about being in a new place? What kind of laws and customs should you be aware of? Do you have any advice for people who aren’t familiar with living in a particular country?

We think that writing about where you’re from is an incredible way to get familiar with other cultures, but also a great way to share your knowledge with others who might not know as much about where they’re from. We hope that this will help everyone learn more about each other!
The entry can be any style of writing e.g. script, poem or song, and can be up to 500 words. Each subject next week will be suggesting how you could write your entry and link it to their subject, here are some examples:

• Product Design – New product launch e.g., new hedgehog house.
• Business proposal for a new company.
• Welcoming new students to EHC – writing a welcome blog post/letter to new students starting in September.
• Travel guide/blog – you are the new arrival in a country what do you want to see and experience.
• New family member – how do you feel about a new family member coming into your family? E.g., new baby, stepparents, or brother/sister-in-law.
• Arriving in a new country to live/work/visit and getting to know their new laws and customs.
