A Level Drama students visited the village of Howarth to explore the Yorkshire moors and visit the Bronte Parsonage Museum, the home of the Bronte sisters, Charlotte, Emily and Ann Bronte, who wrote some of the most famous and renowned books in English Literature.

For their A Level Drama examination, the students are studying ‘Bronte’, a play by Polly Tele, which is a biographical look at the lives of the three sisters and what their life was like as they wrote their most famous novels.

“The opportunity to visit the parsonage museum was really great as we got to see where they grew up and what the location was like that inspired their writing,” said Beauty Ajose, Year 13 student. “Visiting their house and village makes studying the play come to life more.”

The students started with a tour of the graveyard and church and a walk through the village, understanding what the Bronte sisters’ lives would have been like on a day-to-day basis.

They then took a tour through the house the Bronte sisters grew up in, and saw examples of their clothing, drawings, and letters.

“They were all amazing at drawing; there were so many pencil sketches and paintings that they did when they were the same age as we are now,” added Beauty.

The guide from the museum then gave a talk on the lives of the three sisters and well as their father and brother Branwell, and how their childhood and surroundings shaped their world views and influenced their writings.

Finally, the day ended with a walk across some of the Yorkshire moors that were a huge inspiration to all the sisters, but which featured prominently in Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights.

Maria Forryan EHC’s subject leader of Drama said: “Our trip to Haworth with Year 13 Drama was a fantastic chance for students to step directly into the world of the Brontë siblings, seeing where they lived and the moorland that shaped their writing. Experiencing the landscape firsthand has given them rich, authentic insight they can now bring confidently into their final written exam this summer.”
